After an offsean of change, the NWSL officially returns for the 2025 season, which hopes to offer as many surprises as those who came for it.
The season starts with the Orlando Pride that organizes the Chicago stars on Friday, months away from their double-winning season that offers a memory of the greatest power of the competition. Teams can go to champions in the NWSL in short order of lower residents, which was particularly the case in 2024, when the Pride, the Washington Spirit, NJ/NY Gotham FC and the Stroom of Kansas City were the cream of the crop despite Vlotty regular season records in recent years. Those teams still look like contenders in 2025 after most of them have been hung on their core players, with the pride in the first place in Sandra Herrera’s first edition of Power Rankings for the new season.
- Herrera: “Led by manager Seb Hines, Orlando enter 2025 as reigning NWSL Shield winners and NWSL Championship winners, and general manager Haley Carter made sure they are still as stacked as they were last season. Marta and Ally Watt return with Barbra Banda in attack, and even with some offseason turnover, the Pride have Depth.
However, if there is one team that tries to be a real disruptor, it is Houston’s Dash. The last place of last season has been completely renewed for the new year, which brings Angela Hucles Mangano to the new president of women’s football and Fabrice Gautrat for his first head coaching. The team is also full of some new faces, led by US Women’s National Team Up-and-Comer Yazmeen Ryan and NWSL veteran Danielle Colaprico. How quickly a new group can be established is a big question, especially because they come to a spiritual side that won the NWSL Challenge Cup last week and has high ambitions, but the dashboard is worth keeping an eye on this season.

🏆 Liverpool, Newcastle Battle for Sampleware

By James Benge
The first piece of large silverware in England is won on Sunday afternoon with Liverpool and Newcastle United who are fighting for the EFL Cup in Wembley Stadium. The price could not be greater for the latter. Set the importance of qualifying for Europe – even if the Conference League is not particularly the competition in which the Magpies wants to play – would win a permanent place in Northeast Folklore for the Eddie Howe team this weekend.
When Newcastle won a big trophy for the last time, Richard Nixon was in the Oval Office, the NBA consisted of 14 teams and the Beatles were still a few months away from their break. The Inter Cities Cup of 1969 is a long, long way and does not know the Geordie fan base. If the traveling contingent is something like two years ago before their defeat against Manchester United, Northwest will feel a small outpost of the northeast of Sunday afternoon (and probably much of the rest of the weekend).
The EFL cup is perhaps not entirely of a titanic importance for Liverpool, but Tuesday’s elimination by the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain has changed the Calculus somewhat for Arne Slot. This competition often acts as a prelude to Premier League triumphs in late spring. Given their huge lead on Arsenal, a competition title seems to be a given, but the Timbre of the Liverpool season would change somewhat if that was half of a double.
Security of that first trophy will be a more difficult task without Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the ankle injury he ran against PSG, although from Thursday evening it seemed that Ibrahima-Konate had only been laid low with cramps. Also, Newcastle will wonder if they have the weapons to immediately fall back the weak point of the Reds. Anthony Gordon was suspended for the final with a foolish red card against Brighton in the FA Cup and to make things worse, Howe will not be able to throw the first choice of his defense at Mohamed Salah with Lewis Hall and then Burn Out injured.
Those with long enough memories will remember Liverpool against Newcastle as one of the big stresses of the Premier League era. A game even half as exciting as the 4-3 in 1996 and you are ready for a treat (live on Paramount+).

💰 The back line
💵 Dear bets
- Premier League: Manchester City vs. Brighton and Hove Albion, Saturday, 11 am
💰 The Pick: Omar Marmoush to Score (+185) – Omar Marmoush made a big impact when he scored a hat trick for Manchester City, his first goals for the club, last month, but he has now gone five games without scoring. He would like to break that streak at one point and a matchup against the back line of Brighton and Hove Albion, who has so far admitted 40 goals this season, may be beneficial to ensure that he adds more to his city stable. - La Liga: Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona, Sunday, 4 p.m.
💰 The Pick: Barcelona to win 2-1 (+850) – The LA Liga title race comes into the picture on Sunday with Atletico Madrid in the hope of overcoming one point gap between them and the leaders Barcelona. A meticulous game certainly feels, but given the recent form of Barcelona and the cheat code that Lamine Yamal is, the visitors to take revenge earlier this season for their loss against Atletico and strengthen their business to win the Spanish title for the first time in two years.
