Boston NWSL expansion team to change name, months after revealing Bos Nation FC branding
Boston’s incoming NWSL franchise announced on Friday that it will change its name, five months after it was criticized for selecting Bos Nation FC as the name of the expansion of the expansion club.
“Boston, you have waited long enough,” the club wrote in a short statement from social media that was posted late on Friday evening. “We are changing our club name.”
The expansion team introduced the name Bos Nation FC in October, in combination with a campaign called “Too many balls”. Not only was the actual name topped, the campaign “Too many balls” and Catchphrase was considered transphobic by some. The club apologized quickly and removed the launch video that concentrated around the sentence, but had not promised to drop the name Bos Nation FC – a nickname for Boston – until Friday.
“The club is expanding our sincere thanks to our supporters, whose passionate votes we appreciate deeply – not only for their non -repellent support, but also for their honest and critical feedback,” said owner Jennifer Epstein in a club statement. “We could not have completed this process without your input. We strive to build a permanent legacy so that all our fans are welcome, connected and proud to carry our colors and cheer our name for the coming generations.”
The team did not shared an exact timeline for the unveiling of the new name, although it is expected in the coming weeks, while there should be a top this summer. The Boston club will adhere to the clear green that it has used its colors since the early days of its existence, where the color still appears on their social media platforms and website.
The NWSL team of Boston is not the first to change his name during the expansion process. Racing Louisville, which played their first NWSL season in 2021, initially introduced itself as proof Louisville FC before she made a change in time for their inaugural season.
Boston will enter the NWSL in 2026 in addition to an expansion team in Denver.
