Boston Legacy FC: NWSL expansion side unveils their new name ahead of joining league during 2026 season
NWSL Boston has established an official name after being confronted with a recoil to their first rollout of Bos Nation FC. The 15th franchise of the NWSL will now be known as Boston Legacy Football Club.
In September 2023, the NWSL granted expansion to the city of Boston, which gave the team the longest structure to an inaugural season for a new NWSL franchise. Denver NWSL was officially mentioned in January the 16th expansion club and the two newest teams will start in 2026. The new name change for Boston Legacy will only be five months after A failed marketing campaign“Too many balls”, was co-Gelanced around the former Bos Nation FC name.
“Our name is just the beginning,” said owner Jennifer Epstein. “It is what we build together, through dedication, dedication and grit who will give life. We strive for our values to display a city that breathes competition, passion and pride, and to tribute to those who have paved the way for us, including the game changers who helped to build previous women in Boston.
The fall after negative fan response online and from local supporters to the original name led the club to give a public explanation with an apology to the LGBTQ+ community and fans for the pain caused by the marketing campaign, and a promise to do better.
An early next step was actively listening to fans. On their Team blog The club stated that they conducted a public survey that were taken by 1500 fans and professionals in the football brand and “gathered more than 500 name suggestions and feedback from social media, survey racks and respected advisers, including people with deep experience in the women’s football community.”
They then sent more than 400 invitations to people who are interested in more targeted listening groups for more information about feedback. It was from the smaller sessions that the club limited its criteria. The future name would be the final name and had to hit the following comments:
- Before the rich history and various communities of Boston
- Four women’s football
- Unit the largest number of Bostonians
- Requires no explanation
- Resistant to the test of time
- Stay away from colonial, revolutionary war and nautical themes
- Avoid infringing themes used by existing Boston Women’s Pro teams
The organization will announce official colors and top at a later time, but their recent revelation seems to retain a bright green hue. When Legacy FC starts in Boston, this will mark the return of an NWSL franchise for the first time in almost a decade to the New England area.
Former NWSL -Franchise Boston Breakers folded before the 2018 season after Stints in the WUSA and WPS. Now, when Boston takes the field, they will enter the club name Boston Legacy.
“It is always a great day on which women’s professional football is back in Boston,” said former USWNT midfielder and two-time World Cup champion Kristine Lilly, who also advised the club during the hernaming process. “I look forward to seeing the Boston Legacy building a club for a new generation while I honor those who helped. It is an exciting time for women’s football and I am looking forward to cheering the Boston Legacy.”
