Barcelona expanded their undefeated run to 20 games on Sunday with a 4-1 win over Girona, in which Robert Lewandowski noted a brace while his side made sure they would stay on top of La Liga for another week.

It took Barcelona to break down Girona, but they earned the result of their efforts with the opening goal of the game in the 43rd minute, which came from Ladislav Krejci’s own goal. Girona leveled the score early in the second half with a goal from Arnaut Danjuma in the 53rd minute, but Barcelona quickly destroyed every hope that visitors have had. Lewandowski scored only eight minutes after Danjuma did that and then added a second goal in the 77th minute, while Ferran Torres finished things in three days with his second goal.

Here are the biggest moments in the game.

Moment of the game

Even when the score was the same, Barcelona was dominant from start to finish and the second goal of Lewandowski made sure that the score would look like the underlying statistics. The piece begins when Frenkie de Jong – who enjoyed an impressive appearance of the couch – won the ball very deeply in half of Barcelona and a run made all the way to the other end of the field. He then played a pass to Lewandowski while making his own point in the penalty area, and after he quickly got control of the ball, he hit it in the back of the net with a powerful attack from a heavy angle.

Man of the game

Lewandowski was just as effective as on Sunday, and his brace was only the beginning of the story. He took six shots and set four on goal, in which he generated 1.1 out of 2.6 total expected goals from Barcelona himself. The performance was emblematic for the increase in Lewandowski in form this season under Hansi Flick, his former manager at Bayern Munich.

What this result means for Barcelona

Barcelona stays on top of La Liga for another week and still has a three -point lead in second place Real Madrid. They also have a nine points ahead of Atletico Madrid, which were considerably deposed in the competitive title race after repeating points in a 1-1 draw on Espanyol on Sunday.

What is the following

Barcelona will be confronted opposite Atletico Madrid on Wednesday in the second stage of the Copa del Rey semi-final, hoping to gain the benefit after a dramatic 4-4 draw in the first stage in February. They resume La Liga game against Real Betis on Saturday before they returned to the UEFA Champions League promotion in the first stage of their quarter -final draw against Borussia Dortmund the next week.
