Now, at the age of 39, Ovecchkin is about to become the leader of the NHL’s goals, and Gretzky’s 894 mark may pass before the end of the season. Currently, the standard of capitals has 890 goals after scoring the 37th of the season on Sunday against Buffalo Sabers, closing the gap at 6-4 in the third period. Ovecchkin almost had another goal later on the third, but was credited at a starting point for teammate Pierre Dubois for Washington’s 8-5 loss.
With nine games in the 2024-25 season, Ovechkin needs five more goals to get the Gretzky record this season.
While Ovechkin is apparently at the beat of the big record, he has a zero margin for a bug with the regular season that ends. If Ovecchkin continues to mark at its current pace, there is a chance to break the Gretzky record on the last day of the regular season on April 17.

Ovechkin currently has 1,613 total points (890 goals, 723 assists) in his career. On March 9, Ovechkin became the eleventh player in NHL history to reach 1,600 points.
Ovechkin scored 42 goals during the 2022-23 season and scored at least 41 goals in 13 of his 19 seasons of the NHL.
He made history in 2023-24 when he recorded a record of the NHL 18th season of 30 Go, going on 17th by Mike Gartner for honor. He is now up to 19 years old for his career.
