Gretzky offered his congratulations to the whole Ovechkin family and maintained a promise to the captain of the capitals as one of the first to shake hands.
While paying tribute to Ovechkin, Gretzky wore a Gordie Howe. Howe, who attended when Gretzky broke his 801 goals, was why Gretzky wanted to be present when Ovechkin made history.
“When he was breaking the Gordie Howe record, he was there,” Gretzky said. “I said two years ago that, if Alex is approaching my record, I will be here. This is the National Hockey League … You go down. I hope, if anyone breaks Alex’s record, Alex is there to shake hands.”
Ovecchkin will ever be in Gretzky’s shoes, congratulating the player who broke his record of all time? Gretzky said he is not sure that anyone can overcome the number that has arrived at Ovechkin, who will only go up above before he retires.
“I can say -first hand, I know how difficult it is to reach 894, so the 895 is quite special,” said Gretzky. “My congratulations not only to Alex, his mother and his father, his family, his wife and his children … say that the records break, but I’m not sure who will get more goals than this.”
