Wrexham promoted to Championship: Ryan Reynolds club to England’s second tier after third straight promotion

Wrexham will play for the first time since 1982 in the second level of English football after the Welsh Club, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney, have their promotion from League One secure a 3-0 win at Charlton Athletic.

A historic third consecutive promotion for the Red Dragons was protected in style on the Racecourse Ground, a Quickfire Double Salvo by Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith in the beginning of the first half that Phil Parkinson placed on the race for an impressive victory in one of the most important competitions in their recent history. With promotion -rivals Wycombe Wanderers who have been lost in Leyton Orient earlier on Saturday, Wrexham is now guaranteed a berth in second place that promotes with the EFL championship.

It also means that Wrexham is the first team in the history of the top five of the top five in England to earn a third promotion in so many seasons. Bought by Mcelheney and Reynolds in November 2020, Wrexham had taken away for more than ten years in the National League, the fifth division of England, almost now and then to the wall. They will now be confronted with some of the most illustrious names in English football with people like Southampton, Leicester City and, depending on the outcome of the Play -offs, Sunderland.

A place in the second level will only increase the profile of a club that has attracted a legion fans around the world after the success of the Welcome to Wrexham series that the team has followed since the takeover. Those fans in Noord -Wales and beyond will undoubtedly be happy with the style with which promotion was protected.

Rathbone’s beautiful low ride of a short corner shot the hosts ahead in the 15th minute, a powerful effort that flew through a scrum of bodies and addicks goalkeeper Will Mannion was unable to come to his nearby post quickly enough. If that was an impressive opener, the second was even more remarkable, a cut ball across the top by Matty James and addicted to the volley by Smith. In an instant, Wrexham was on the break of the championship.

It is not for nothing that Charlton is League One’s shape side. After he had produced the tide immediately after the Wrexham One-Two, a smart ball found the top of the Tenna Watson who came from the right side behind James McClean and forced a rescue from Arthur Okonkwo. Watson continued to ask questions to the hosts, while Charlton fought to breathe new life into their own automatic promotional strokes, which were dependent on it in Wales.

However, Wrexham held impressively firmly in the second half, hunger deep and challenged their opponents to break them down. Hardly a cross came into the box without a Dan Scarr -head clearing it up. With 10 minutes to play, Max Cleworth showed them how it was done, met a beautiful ball through the head of Smith, a Nick from Macauley Gillephey who leaves Mannion without a chance.

All persistent doubts were then rejected, a joyful crowd that was able to celebrate a promotion that seemed unthinkable even half decade ago. Wrexham is on its way to the championship.
