NHL coaching carousel 2025: Rangers fire Peter Laviolette after two seasons, Ducks move on from Greg Cronin

Just two days after the regular season, the Nhl Coaching’s carousel has begun turning. On Saturday, two teams made coaching changes.

Following a disappointing season that ended the lack of playoffs for the first time since 2021, the New York Rangers have fired Peter Laviolette. In his two seasons behind the Rangers bench, Laviolette brought the team to a global record from 94-59-11. In 2024, New York went to the Eastern Conference Final under the Laviolette clock.

By 2024-25, the ranges were expected to fight again for the Stanley Cup again, but the wheels fell after a hot start. Key players became seasons and the Rangers could not find any consistency.

In the team’s announcement, CEO Chris Drury thanked Laviolette and assistant coach Phil Housley for their service.

“Peter is first class all the way, both professionally and personal, and I am very grateful for his passion and dedication to the Rangers in his time as their main coach,” Drury said in a statement.

Shortly before the Rangers fired Laviolette, the Ducks Anaheim took the first step of the carousel of the low season, shooting Greg Cronin after two seasons.

In his first campaign behind Ducks’ bench, Cronin led the team to a 27-50-5 record, which was good for the seventh in the Pacific Division. In 2024-25, Anaheim showed an improvement in the victory column, passing 35-37-10, but the team still finished sixth in the division and 16 points from a playoff place.

In a statement, Ducks’s CEO, Pat Verbeek, said that shooting Cronin was a hard decision, but he felt that the team “needed a change of direction and a new voice.” When Anaheim starts searching for a new coach, the team will probably look for someone who can get the young nucleus to make the leap in the containment of the playoff.

As the teams put an arc in the 2024-25 season, there will be more training changes, so be alert to Sports CBS to keep up with the whole movement.
