Longest active NCAA women’s basketball tournament streaks
Since the beginning of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament in 1982, only one team has appeared in each issue of IT: The Tennessee Lady Volunteers, one of the teams synonymous with perfection in women’s university basketball.
But several other schools also combined impressive lanes, some lasting more than two decades.
Here are the longest stripes of active appearance in the women’s basketball tournament NCAA.
Tennessee (43)
Tennessee hired the late, Great Pat Summitt as the head coach in 1974, and four years later were in Aiaw Final Four, a tournament that preceded the NCAA basketball tournament. Summitt teams appeared in four AIAW Final Fours and the final four in the first year of the NCAA tournament in 1982. Summitt teams went to 18 finals and won 16 seconds of tournament titles.
Uconn (36)
Believe it or not, there was a period when Uconn was not at the NCAA tournament. Geno Auriumma was hired in 1985 and missed a big dance in each of his first three seasons. But in the fourth year, in 1989, he won the Uconn Big East and entered.
Huskies have since appeared at the NCAA tournament. The first Final Four in 1991 created and captured their first national championship in 1995.
